Comments
Comments: Joined my friend on this hike, who is working on his few remaining 52 With A View hikes. We thankfully did not encounter any ice. White Dot Trail is steep and rocky, but in good shape. It was not too wet, despite the recent heavy rains. It was very windy above treeline and especially at the summit. The wind speeds were much greater than forecasted. Views were great, but a bit limited due to low clouds off in the distance. White Cross Trail was very, very wet, with running water on the trail. Consequently, the soles of our shoes were always wet, thus making the smooth rocks on the trail very slippery. White Cross is a more gradual way down than White Dot, but is rough, rocky and as previously mentioned, very wet. White Cross should remain very wet for a while, given heavy rains forecasted this weekend. It would also be extremely scary to descend if icy, especially because most of the herd paths running parallel to the trail have been intentionally blocked off with fallen trees and limbs. In my humble opinion, it is best not to descend via White Cross unless there is a long, dry spell with some above freezing temps.
