A FINE day in the forest was had. This was a trio I had always wanted to do but never had done. The trail starts off with a fine stand of softwood and then rapidly ascends to the ridgeline. The views from Crawford live up to their namesake. It offers commanding ledgey vista views of the Sandwich, Presidentials, the Pemi, Kearsarge North, Jackson Township, & Mount Chocorua (or Count Chocula if you have hiked with me and I pointed it out). It also has views of arguably the best named pairing in the Whites - Mounts Hope and Hopeless. Davis to Parker/Stairs Col was mainly dry, a few patches of boot sucker mud here and there, but lovely footing for the majority. We opted for Stairs first and the climb from the col is delightfully menacing in its gradient, especially when my legs thought they where on vacation from the mellow ridge walk. The views from here are lovely as well. It's quite unique viewport to look over at Resolution, its an optical illusion being on the 'top step' and seeing the bottom step and the col. Little vertigo action! We summited the viewpoint of Mt. Resolution and this too offered fine views, but took a back seat to the aforementioned pair. The 'summit' on gaia is not the actual summit, despite the cairn (3410). I found a very loose herd path on the ledge before that spur and found a spot seven feet higher than the cairn after thrashing around at a spruce tree at 3417. Ken's book mentions it being the northeastern knob (which I should have read before hand) so I guess I will have to return for the true high point :) Booted it out in short order. Only saw 11 trampers all day, 7 of which where ascending on our way out. |
