Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Hoppable rivulets.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of blowdowns, one significant, on the trail from Monadnock HQ to Cascade Link. Trail was otherwise in good shape, though you really have to keep your eyes peeled for the blazes on Smith Summit. Watch out for extremely slippery rocks on Cascade Link and Cliff Walk. Lots of rain has kept the lower parts of the trail wet, with lots of standing water and mossy trickles keeping things slick in several spots.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Definitely some mosquitoes around today, and there were a few tarns that attracted large swarms of crawling bugs that I didn’t identify. Some termites noticed on the way down, including a swarm covering a rock on Cliff Walk that I really could have used as a handhold!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: We saw a bag of food on the summit and couldn’t tell if the person had left it to explore or left it behind. A glove was also stashed in a cairn. We left both in case the person came back.

Comments
Comments: It was a beautiful day to be walking, and the leaves are just beginning to turn. Weather was humid and much hotter than we expected below treeline. Weather was cool and pleasant at the summit, no need for a jacket. This loop was very lightly trafficked—we barely saw anyone on the way up or down! Summit was busy as usual but not as bad as I expected for a fall Saturday. Take care on the rocks. My sturdy boots were no match for the slick layer of moss and moisture coating some of them below treeline. One deer spotted as the sun set. Acorns are falling frequently now, but miraculously, none hit us!
