Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Available parking at Rattle River Trail lot on Route 2. Parking lot was 1/3 full when we started at 7:30 AM. Was 3/4 full in the afternoon. Most of the cars appeared to belong to AT section hikers. This parking lot would likely get full on weekends.

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All were easy. First crossing of Rattle River just past AT Shelter was confusing. We crossed at the wrong spot and had to wander around the river bed to find where the trail goes. We were not the only ones confused about that.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Brushing and dead tree branch removal on Kenduskeag Trail would be very helpful. Also noticed some busted bog bridges on the Kenduskeag Trail just east of the junction with the Rattle River, heading toward Moriah. We did not go that way, but just noticed them.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Some of the steep ledges on Kenduskeag Trail might be a bit tricky for some dogs, but most should handle them.
Bugs
Bugs: Just a few black flies on the lower part of the descent.

Comments
Comments: Rattle River Trail is easy for the first 3 miles. The first crossing of the Rattle River was a bit confusing, as I previously mentioned. After 3 miles, it then gets steep with lots of wet rocks, which requires careful foot placement. Kenduskeag Trail was a bit of a car wash from light rain the previous night and a total car wash after it briefly rained on us. This is a beautiful trail, with some beautiful alpine meadows, tons of blueberries and lots of sections in the alpine zone. Unfortunately, we had very limited views, as we were in the clouds. The wet ledges were very slippery. My hiking partner stepped in some mud on the trail and got sucked in up to her knee. Took a serious effort for her to pull herself out. When she did, her boot was covered with a couple inches of thick mud. Be careful playing in the mud there. It was almost like quicksand! We only saw two other people on Kenduskeag, but lots of AT thru hikers and section hikers on Rattle River. Shelburne Moriah is a beautiful mountain. Will have to go back, maybe doing a car spot and traverse with the north branch of the Shelburne Trail.
