Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Thoreau Falls bridge is in pieces on the south bank. I was able to cross the East Branch a bit upstream without a problem. No issues finding places to cross the North Fork or Jumping Brook further north.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All trail segments in Wilderness are maintained to those standards. Junctions are signed and though there are no trails blazes the footways are obvious. The abandoned portion of Thoreau Falls Trail was in surprisingly decent shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn't see any.
Bugs
Bugs: Skeeters were fairly hungry on this section of Wilderness Trail - so much so I zipped on the pant legs, put on a long-sleeved shirt and wore a bug net. Not so bad elsewhere.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: Trails are mostly dry with some minor mud spots here and there. Quite a few fallen trees in Wilderness but none hinder forward progress.

Today's objective was to visit the 1959 plane crash memorial. I realized the previous times I've been through this area I had not searched it out - so since I was looking for a "low" hike I figured this one fit the bill. From the lot I rode a junker bike to the Wilderness boundary, locked it to the gate and started the trek. Once I got to the area where Jumping Brook enters into the North Fork on Thoreau Falls Trail I wanted to find the northern terminus of the old trail section. I either missed it or it is no longer recognizable due to washouts - however I did find the old corridor and the memorial. I then followed the old trail out to its southern terminus, crossing the North Fork again and connecting with the current Thoreau Falls Trail. On the way out I had a standoff with a porcupine: sure I wanted to pass but I sure didn't want to get too close either - eventually it waddled into the woods. Once on the bike I was back at the lot in no time.

It was a nice day exploring a remote area. As I was biking in I encountered a group of youths coming out, presumably from the Franconia Brook tent site and I was biking out I passed seven others. However, within Wilderness I did not see a soul all day.
