Comments
Comments: This hike was a north to south traverse of the Kilkenny Ridge. We passed only 3 hikers between North Pond and Cabot who were day hiking a loop om Thursday. The snow depth and instability became an issue when rounding the Horn, requiring light traction and gaiters. Recent rains created wet trail conditions and higher but manageable water crossings. Overnight at Cabot worked fine, but we were not able to find the water source. Good water was available at Willard Notch. The north facing slopes of all summits had snow patches, fields and drifts which were loose and caused frequent post holes. Ours were the only boot tracks south of Cabot to Waumbeck, but the moose were abundant. The weeks mountains had many blow downs in clusters which slowed progress requiring many diverging’s followed by trail finding challenges. The worst blow downs were at Middle and South Weeks causing considerable delays.
It was a big trip, thanks to Jon R. for most of the planning and logistics, sorry to miss Geo on this one.
