Great day to hike Monadnock, and no traction necessary. Sky conditions were favorable enough to get a good view of white topped Washington on the horizon; and LaFayette was also visible, but barely due to distant haze. On the way back down I took a bit of a bushwhack detour of off of Red Spot (at 2600' elev) to check out the "cave"--it is at 2600" elevation, and about a quarter of a mile from Red Spot (there is a contouring herd path to it). The door and copper roof are still intact, and some weather sealing around the chimney pipe has been done since I last saw it about ten years ago. Rather than go back to Red Spot from the cave I bushwhacked NW back up to Pumpelly--no hint of a herd path for that stretch. |
