Comments
Comments: There was a bit of everything out there today. The hike up Gunstock was mostly dry trail until just below the summit, where the ice started on the steeps. It was navigable without microspikes, as it was just in isolated patches, and I made it to the summit barebooting. The spikes went on shortly after leaving the summit and stayed on the rest of the hike. I did debate taking them off, but the patches of bare ground, or rock, were few and far between. Best to wear an old pair of spikes and wear them down a bit than be constantly taking them on and off. There was significant snow on the north side of Belknap Mountain. You could put on snowshoes there, but it wasn't necessary today. The monorail was firm enough that I didn't posthole. The snow is still fairly deep there, however, so as it warms in the future, snowshoes would be beneficial to the trail. The majority of the trail across the ridge was hard packed icy snow. It stayed this way until about half way down Piper Mountain, where the ice gave way to running water and mud. Expect a bit of mud, snow, ice, and dry rock. And wet feet.
