Comments
Comments: What a spectacular bluebird day! All trails were very firm all day long. Snowshoes were not required yesterday, nor were crampons or an ice axe, but that could always change. The only problems we encountered was where freshly drifted snow loosely filled in postholes from previous days, thus creating posthole traps. I filled in a bunch of those nasty posthole traps along the way, but still some remain. Snowshoes may have been useful in just a few isolated spots on Rollins with 2 or 3 inches of drifted snow on the trail, but spikes were a better option overall. The infamous ledges on Whiteface were about as easy as it gets today, with the snow providing good traction, with minimal ice. If there is any appreciable snow in the future or warm temps are predicted, snowshoes would most definitely be the way to go. If there is appreciable melting and freezing, crampons might be needed on the Whiteface ledges.
