Comments
Comments: From the Lincoln Woods parking lot, I crossed the Kanc and made an easy crossing of the Hancock Branch over good snow bridges; I then bushwhacked to the base of the west fork of the northwest slides which come off the west Scar Ridge summit; instead of ascending the slide I whacked up the ridge directly to the west. This ridge had a lot of scrappy growth but opened up closer to 3000ft. After the terrain leveled out I slabbed east and eventually reached the top of the west fork of the slides; incredible views of Bondcliff & Franconia here. I visited the summit of Scar Ridge’s west peak; proceeded down to the Black-Scar col and hit the herd path, which I took out to Black Mtn. On the E. side of Black’s summit cone, there was enough snow to provide a great view of Split Cliff and East Osceola. I descended off Black through mostly open woods and then hit some old logging roads which took me back to the Hancock Branch. Total time was 9 hours; snowshoeing conditions throughout were subpar, with an unsupportive crust and lots of sliding backwards on ascents.
