Comments
Comments: Made first tracks up Stony Brook today. After a nice freeze this morning conditions were ripe for spikes up to the ridge. After that snowshoes were ideal as there was some drifting and minimal fresh snowfall the night prior. Treadway is still soft. Didn't encounter any hikers until the summit (plenty of traffic from Carter-Moriah trail out of Gorham). Passed a few hikers in snowshoes on my way down the ridge as well as the bareboot brigade which left their mark on conditions. Hopefully those in snowshoes helped smooth things back out but with how warm it was this Afternoon expect pock marked trail and some frozen post holes on the ridge. I switched out of snowshoes after the second small water crossing and legit bare booted back to the car with no damage to Treadway though it felt like it was getting softer in the last mile. If hiking in frozen temps spikes should be fine to the ridge but after that snowshoes are still required. I had a good laugh watching one guy post hole to his hips. Great day out and relatively quiet. Weather was a little too warm for my liking (for winter hiking) but beautiful nonetheless.
