The trailhead parking lot is unplowed so you'll have to park along the road. If you hike in via the ski trail, snowshoes or skis are required. Conditions varied with lots of hard crusted icy snow. Above 3500' several inches of loose snow under a thick hard crust covered the monorail. Minimal drifted snow above 4000'. The crust was beaten by boots and snowshoes making traction challenging at times. Several sections of the trail were completely filled in resulting in steep icy cross slopes. Aggressive snowshoes with crampons or crampons will work best. Anything less and you might slide off the trail into the woods. I used snowshoes the entire hike except for the steep descent of Osceola when I switched to crampons to gain traction. MSR Lightning Ascents just weren't holding on the steeper slopes. |
