Comments: On the trail at 10:00. Half a mile or so on the snowmobile trail from the parking lot, thankfully just a couple 4 strokes passed us. Not much snow on the flat mountain pond trail, maybe 4 inches and untracked. Hard to tell when the last time someone used the McCrillis trail, it felt as though there was some firmness under the powder down low, but 1/2 mile in snow got deeper (8-10) and felt like we were packing it to the ground. In places the trail was as obvious as it gets in minter, in others hard to follow (no blazes in the Wilderness). Snow continued to get deeper as we climbed, and as the sun got up it started to get a bit heavier and stickier. After about 2000 ft the snow was much deeper and drifting in spots, which slowed us down significantly. At about 2400 ft, even though we were less than a mile from the summit, the steepest and deepest was yet to come and it was already 13:30 so we knew we wouldn't summit byout turn-around time so we turned back. We found a sunny log a few tenths down the trail and sat down for a sandwich and some hot cocoa. As we were finishing up, here comes William from Danvers ripping up the trail in tiny running snowshoes and shirtless! He was thoroughly enjoying the packed out trail we made for him. He had covered in 90 minutes what took us 3 hours. We all laughed when I told him the party was over in 2 or 3 tenths. He headed up, we headed down. He looked to be pretty fit, but that would have been a real tough summit alone with the shoes he had. Hope he made it. We didn't see anone else on McCrillis, and just two other hikers on Flat Mountain Pond trail. McCrillis is a scenic trail through light forest, and not heavily trafficed. If you like solitude, McCrillis will be a fast track once our track sets up overnight, at least up to the last mile. After that, it depends on how far William made it but I would think the track would be much softer were only he broke it put. Could be a fun blast up and down before the snow tomorrow, especially if you have a few folks sharing the lead.
