Scar Ridge (main summit), party of 5. We took an alternate winter route to the NEHH summit. Starting at the condo development E of the ski area on Beachnut Road, we bushwhacked between two condos and slabbed SSE along the middle W slope of Black Mountain through mostly open woods, easy footing, using a few sections of XC ski trails but only briefly. At a point (ENE of Loon West Peak as a landmark) we struck a well-cleared, steep, bootleg glade ski trail and decided to follow it uphill to where it emerged on the ridge just S of the Black-Scar col. There was a nice view of the N side of Scar at the crest. From there we continued to follow an easy ridge BC ski trail to the start of the Scar herd path. We detoured to a hidden ledge with a S view on a ridge knob then returned to the herd path to the summit of scar. Could not get the cannister to open. There was a lot of flagging (some of it very recent) on the herd path; I pulled out quite a pocketful of it on the way out (LNT, folks) but did not get all of it. We went down a slightly different way, following the steep glade down to the brook but did not prefer it to the way we went in. There was no snow up to ~3K elevation, with about 4" crusty snow on the summit. |
