Hiking Trail Conditions Report

Trails
Trails: Long Pond Road, Blueberry Mountain Trail, Blueberry Mountain Summit Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 19, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking for the SE trailhead is very, very tight. The side of High St. has not been plowed. I managed to squeeze into a spot right at the start of Long Pond Rd. Others were parked along Long Pond Rd., but I would advise against this in case USFS needs to get in. I met two folks who came up from Page Rd. and reported that parking there is virtually non-existent and that Blueberry Mtn. Rd. is not plowed. Long Pond Rd., as well as the trailhead for Blueberry Mtn. Trail along it, have been plowed, but the road is gated closed. If I had to guess, I'd say this is in preparation for another timber harvest, But I really don't know for sure.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None, but there are a few areas of open water on the trail.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Blazing should be improved for winter navigation (and overall, it's quite sparse and faded in general). A couple of blowdowns lower down on the trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I guess.
Bugs
Bugs: Nope.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: I lost a pole basket somewhere on the descent. I don't need it back, but if someone finds it, please carry it out.

Comments
Comments: Snowshoes are definitely still needed here. There is an established snowshoe track, but it is not consolidated enough for bare boots or spikes. The snowpack is soft, loose, and not ready for foot traffic yet. Where the trail takes a right turn at 2.0 mi. from High St., there are a couple of false tracks. Follow the most-traveled track.

Single digit temps at the start warmed up to about 20 at the finish, but the complete lack of wind and bright sun made it fairly comfortable. Six other folks were out, all wearing snowshoes.
