trail in excellent shape up to the ledges. Trail had already been broken by 3 hikers with snowshoes from start to beginning of ledges as I was heading up. Trail was packed and smooth to that point. Those hikers then turned around. From that point trail was unbroken and snow depth ranged from a few inches to three foot drifts (drifts were only a few feet long), typical snow depth was 1 foot to 18 inches. I made it almost to dense pine grove that leads to the summit. I stopped maybe an 1/8th of a mile to 1/4 mile from summit. Met two more people hiking up as I was coming down, my guess is that they would make it to the summit.
lovely hike, great day. Temperatures about 19 degrees when I started, maybe 24 when I got back to car. Snow was pristine. Great view down onto the lake and across to Belknap range. Met 5 other people on the trail, 3 coming down, 2 coming up behind me. Everyone in snowshoes. Recommend snowshoes right from the start of the trail because the packed trail was near perfect as I came down (other than approach to summit across ledges and that might be packed by end of today). |
