Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, December 15, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking lot at Lafayette Place campground is partially plowed but a large portion is just solid frozen ice with vehicle tracks and ruts. Steer clear of this area if you don't have AWD/4WD... I got my FWD car stuck in an icy rut and had to have help getting pushed out.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There were a couple of small unbridged hops - all easily stepped over. There also was some running water on the Lonesom Lake trail past the lake heading up to the ridge. Easily avoidable and can't imagine it will be liquid for long with the falling temps tonight.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of large blowdowns on the trail between the lake and the ridge that had to be passed under or climbed over.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Met 1 happy dog in a Ruffwear jacket near lonesome lake.

Comments
Comments: Beautiful afternoon with gorgeous sunshine amidst an otherwise very cold day with chilly winds. The temp at the TH upon return was 9 degrees F and falling in line with a forecasted cold night.

The trail from the campground to the lake was a breeze on a fully packed down and very smooth ramp. After the second junction around the lake on Lonesome Lake Trail things were a little more difficult due to frozen solid post-holes all the way to Kinsman Ridge and up to the Cannonballs. There was about 1" of fresh snow on this part with no new footprints, however, the trail really needs some more snow and a few snowshoers to make improve. At this point until there is new snow, snowshoes are useless but light traction is necessary. Use caution to avoid easily turning an ankle in previous hikers frozen solid bootprints!
