Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Nice new lot off to the side of forest road 233. The road continues past a gate. The Bog Brook trailhead is signed. Carter Notch Road upper section is not plowed.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: I avoided the first three brook crossings on the Bog Brook Trail by using forest road 233. The other crossings on the Bog Brook trail were not difficult. The crossing of Wildcat River wasn't difficult however some of the rocks were moss covered and slippery. The crossing of Bog Brook on the Wildcat River Trail was easy.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The bog bridges on the Bog Brook Trail are in poor condition. There are many mud pits on the Bog Brook Trail that often have rocks or roots to help in passage. The bog bridges on the Wildcat River Trail are in better condition with only some broken logs. There are three tree falls across the Wildcat River Trail between Wildcat River and the AMC hut. The crown of a birch across the trail uphill from the river crossing. A small evergreen midway between the river and hut. A ~6" diameter evergreen across the trail below the hut. All obstacles were easy to get by (step over or around). There were other downed trees that had been axed so the trail is maintained.

Comments
Comments: Decided to hike the less popular side of Carter Dome to avoid the weekend crowds. On ascent via Bog Brook/Wild River/Rainbow trails, I saw nobody after leaving the parking until almost reaching the top of Carter Dome. On descent via Wild River Trail, I saw nobody from the hut to the parking area.
Lots of mud on the Bog Brook Trail with trace amounts of snow and bare ground. Same surface conditions for the Wild River Trail. The Rainbow Trail had a more consistent thin layer of snow (less than 1"). The Carter-Moriah Trail had a highly compacted thin layer of snow.
No slippery ice so no need for traction.
Good view of the Baldfaces from the leafless hardwood forest low on the Rainbow Trail. Area of ice storm damaged birches on the Rainbow Trail. Nice view of Wildcat from the open southerly knob on the Rainbow Trail.
The Bog Brook and Wild River Trails were marked by blue diamond metal placards on trees (ski trail). There were no blazes on the Rainbow Trail so a degree of care to keep to the trail in the hardwood forest section. The Wild River trail had many yellow blazes.
