Comments: What an interesting and challenging 'whack up Scar Ridge.

We decided upon taking the less-used southern Mack Brook route to bag the peak. This route affords pleasant views from the slide in the upper valley and provides relatively easy bushwhacking along the brook to the base of the slide. From the top of the slide to the summit, however, it is no easy going (an understatement), and has lots of thick spruce and big blowdowns. When we were in this section, we stayed left, to avoid the really intense blowdown, and eventually found the herd path that comes from the direction of Loon Mountain. We followed this winding herd path all the way to the summit where we found a red register hanging on a tree from a small, green rope. (By the way, no views here, but there's plenty of blowdowns!)

On the way down, we followed a herd path that went around the summit blowdown patch and met back up with the herd path we followed up. We followed the herd path a bit farther, then after losing it, decided to bushwhack straight towards the slide instead of taking the way through the blowdown that we took up. After a lot of thrashing through the very thick spruce. We saw the slide on our right and emerged onto to it, very scratched but happy. We then followed the slide back down to the start of Mack Brook and bushwhacked out.
