Trails: Davis Path, Mt. Crawford Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, July 31, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: In the large lot at the trailhead on US 302 in lower Crawford Notch.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No issues, everything is extremely dry in this area.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: This section of Davis Path needs major work. Severe erosion has compromised just about all of the rock steps. Lots of loose rock on the trail requires some caution on the descent. Water bars were minimal, and those that were there were filled with debris. No blowdowns.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sure.
Bugs
Bugs: A few, but not bad.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: A black and brown dog has been lost in this area. I saw it this morning following another hiker, and apparently it followed them all the way to Stairs. Another hiker was allegedly bringing the dog down, but it got away from them and wasn't seen again. If found, it belongs to the owners of Notchland Inn. I've encountered this dog way up on Davis Path before, so I guess this might be a recurring thing for this adventurous pup.

Comments
Comments: What a beautiful day to sit at the summit of Crawford for a few hours for a USFS wilderness monitoring visit. We couldn't have lucked out more with the weather. Not too busy of a day, but a number of weekday hikers were out. This area is arid, so everything was bone dry. No water beyond the brook along the lower part of the trail. Amazing views as always from this peak and a nice breeze kept things cool. Nice to see Jerry out there who was hitting Crawford, Stairs, and Resolution for the 52WAV list.
