Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Whiteface Brook on Signal Ridge Trail is the only water crossing with water in it - easy to cross and a great place to refresh on the way back.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Easy trail to large rock(about 1.6 miles from trail fork or 3.6 from start), followed by birch logs, about 150' further, indicating start of bushwhack. It is very easy and clear to find these landmarks.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Too tough for a dog, especially the rock/talus field
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitos required spray or head net in someplaces. No black flies except on the summit by the canister, then everywhere!

Comments
Comments: Basically, follow the drainage ditch as far as possible, then go up to about 2800' and find a pretty well used path going off to the right and up and follow it to talus field. Look for a carin straight up at the top of the rock field. Most of the rocks move so we used all four to go across the rock field. We had to carefully watch the trail from here up since individual blowdowns have created several new very thick wooded paths around them, when it levels off near top there is a major old blow down that we went around to the right and found the trail again that lead to the canister. We carry a Gaia iPhone app for backup and looked at it when we reached the blowdown area on the summit, since we could not find a trail or canister. This was a mistake since the Gaia map had the summit marked about 200' short of the canister summit - find the trail north of the old blow down and keep walking. The canister is in a wooded area, not in any of the blowdown areas. Several recommendations - work gloves are very helpful, we hiked when it was about 75 degrees and went through 3 liters of water each, Scar Ridge is a tougher bushwack for density of trees and lack of any clear path, but Vose Spur is a tougher climb, going straight up! - there are no switchbacks on the bushwhack paths. We found the rock field a great place to eat lunch on the way down, a nice view and breeze to keep the bugs away.
