Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Vose Spur, NH
Trails
Trails: Signal Ridge Trail, Carrigain Notch Trail, bushwhack
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, May 30, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Sawyer River Road is open! We parked at the trailhead at 8:30am with maybe 8 other vehicles. Lot was maybe half full when we left with Carrigain hikers one would assume.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Whiteface Brook at 2.1 mi rock hoppable with care; we crossed over to the little island just to the left of the main trail, then straight across to the other side. Some rocks were wet and barely above water, so YMMV.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All clear to the start of the bushwhack at 3.9 mi. After that, well it's a whack.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Not sure I'd drag a dog up Vose Spur. Going up not a prob, but the descent is nasty enough when you're on two legs with arms you can use to grab onto stuff.
Bugs
Bugs: A few bugs, but there was a moderate breeze so they weren't too bad even on the flatland.

Comments
Comments: The herd paths are getting pretty well defined these days. The woods are pretty thick from just below the talus field to the summit. If you wander off the path you're in for a fight. The path we followed comes up from the SE to a false summit. Keep going! The actual summit and the canister are maybe 1/4 mile further on. _That_ part is a little less defined and has some significant areas of blowdown you have to noodle through. Keep track of your descent route (we didn't and wandered aimlessly for a bit, oops). In back of the summit canister there's an orange tie indicating what one would think is a route, however we found that way thoroughly blocked by a massive blowdown.

No snow or ice except hiding in little crevices. We brought traction after reading recent Carrigain reports. Unnecessary for this hike. Better to bring a lawn chair and enjoy the view from the talus field.
