Comments
Comments: I expected terrible things today being mud season, bug season, and monorail season. But it really was very pleasant! The mud along Kinsman Ridge Trail was pretty epic at times. Bring hip waders, or at least a change of socks. Don't trust the planks across the mud--they're sooooo slippery! I did a quick rock hop across some mud to a plank and ended up flat on my back as soon as my feet hit the plank. There was almost no snow whatsoever. There was the tiniest bit of monorail in a few places, but all easily avoided. I had spikes and never took them out of the pack. I'd still recommend bringing them though, because, well, why not? A little bit of overnight ice and I could see wanting them. We went up Fishin' Jimmy to North and South Kinsmans, then back across the Cannon Balls and up KRT to Cannon, then down Hi-Cannon. I really enjoyed the upper part of Hi-Cannon, but the constant switchbacks on the lower portion got a bit old. As an extra reward (aka challenge), we got to help an injured hiker back to the lot--he believed he broke his leg, and couldn't put any weight on it. We carried him out the last quarter mile or so, thanks to teamwork from a few of us; although, it's amazing how long a quarter mile is when you're carrying someone out over rocks, roots and bridges!
