Snowshoes required for loop!
The trail up to the shelter was a frustrating mix of mud, monorail, and sticky snow. Made me wish I had retractable microspikes.
After the shelter the snow was 2-3 plus feet deep, save for some bare rock above the knob.
I wore snow shoes after the shelter for everything save the bare rock until I got about halfway down Bicknell trail.
Some one before me was able to bareboot up to south Baldface, but it looked like they had a terrible time. They gave up after about 100 ft on the ridge to the north peak.
Broke the trail along the ridge and down from North baldface. Think I followed it for the most part but lost it about 100 ft before the northern summit and ended up going nearly vertical....so sorry about that.
There is a lot of snow up there. Some of those banks must be 5 feet deep and soft. Only going to get worse as it gets softer. No ice at all and everything rocky was bare and dry. No crampons needed.
Someone had hiked up Bicknell trail and stopped at that junction so it was a nice relief after breaking trail for so long.
I can't recommend snowshoes enough. It's going to take a lot to melt all that snow and it's soft and deep. Stay safe everyone. |
