Several crawl-under blowdowns on Kinsman Ridge trail. Most are on the Cannon Balls but one is just before South Kinsman. |

We went up Lonesome Lake and Fishin' Jimmy to the ridge then out to North & South Kinsman then doubled back to head over the Cannon Balls to Cannon Mt summit and down to the Tram parking. For the most part spikes did the job fine since the trail was well packed but the section between Kinsman Jct and Lonesome Lake trail is borderline. I switched to snowshoes after a couple minutes while others stayed in spikes. Neither were ideal for that section as it was rough from previous bare-booters but also right on the edge of being able to support a person's weight. Trails are definitely more icy then just a few days ago. There were maybe a dozen sections with slick ice on Fishin' Jimmy and Kinsman Ridge. Maybe half-a-dozen required slow cautious foot placement and three were very difficult due to ice flows on the path with no trees to grab. One of these bad spots is on Fishin' Jimmy. Another is on the ledge heading up Cannon after the jct with Lonesome Lake. Two of us had whippets (like an ice axe) and found them very handy at those points but, with care, they can be done by anyone. The trail down from the summit to the tram is very well packed and only has a couple icy spots but most of us still put on crampons just to be able to move faster without worry. |
