| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Parking lot is plowed with plenty of parking. Bathrooms were open. Parking is $5. A tree has fallen across the exit road from the parking lot so everyone was using the entrance road to come and go. |

| Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Blue, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Postholes |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Traction |

| Water Crossing Notes: |
Brook is not bridged on ascent to Welch. Water is fast flowing and deep right at the beginning of the trail. Had to take off my pack in order to cross it without falling in. Trail crossed brook several times, but the first time is the hardest crossing. |

| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw just one dog, a husky who seemed to be enjoying the snow. Other dogs should have jackets and something to cover their feet and protect them from the ice. |

| Comments: |
Trail is a mess below the tree line. Frozen postholes are all over the place as are tons of downed sticks and tree limbs that block the trail and get caught in your snowshoes. Above the tree line, the trail can be hard to find in places because the blazes are covered with a layer of ice covered with snow. Some of the ledges are very steep. Crampons would be useful. Trail descending Dickey is very icy with minimal snow cover. I slipped and fell on the ice.
A beautiful hike all in all, great views. Just make sure to bring crampons, poles, snowshoes and maybe even an ice axe. |
