With snow coming in tomorrow, this report will be obsolete very soon, but today Crawford Path was a superhighway, nice dry light snow and well-consolidated. It seemed like there was about a 50/50 split between spikes and snowshoes, and either choice seemed to work well for folks. There was some drifting up on the shoulder of Pierce, but not a big deal. I was planning to do an out and back on Crawford Path as it was my first time up there and I was flying solo, but I met Jamie from Portland at the peak and we decided to do the loop around on Webster Cliff Trail and Mizpah Cutoff. Those trails were less well packed, but still OK in spikes. Off the monorail, the snow is a minimum of about knee deep. The wind was pretty fierce as you just came up onto the open area on the northeast side of Pierce's summit, but once up to the summit itself the wind dropped off and it was quite pleasant. Thanks to Jamie for making the loop a go, and to the three younger hikers who gave me M&Ms and a bite of a bagel sandwich on the way up. |
