Comments
Comments: We wore snowshoes and broke trail in 6"-8" of new, dense snow, with one set of recent post holes making things more difficult for a while until they gave up. We switched to light crampons (Trail Pros) at the first ledges. They were overmatched in the conditions, with ice under sometimes crusted snow, but better than nothing. An ice axe came in handy in a couple of places, making progress easier and safer, but the ledges could be done without one. We switched back to snowshoes at the south summit for the deeper snow on the Rollins Trail and wore them back to the top of steeps. From there down, we wore the Trail Pros with the trails better consolidated by three hikers following us so the trail below the steeps is now packed but a little choppy. Snowshoes (preferable) or traction will work until the next snow. Rollins Trail beyond the true summit had been marginally broken out by one snowshoer.
Fun day with Chris in spite of no views in the frozen fog.
