I was a fool. I read the other trail reports from the Whites and saw things like "spikes car to car" and "almost wheelchair accessible" , so I left my snowshoes at home. That being said I only sank to the top of my boots for about 90% of the hike in Hillsounds.
Every year I do this loop in winter and it seems that most everyone goes to South Baldface and calls it a day. This year I decided to go CCW and mine were the only tracks crossing the river...so up Baldface circle I went. After this storm cycle tonight shoes will be mandatory but I would be hesitant to put them on until after the second river crossing if going CCW. Lots of rock and running water still about. All was going ok until you hit the cliff band about .25 miles from treeline. I fenagled a bypass to the right because it is full on boilerplate at about 45 degrees, seems like too short a section to break out the crampons. The ridge is the usual mixed route, bare rock, low angle ice, and crotch deep snow in small sections. There was an ancient refrozen snowshoe track that kept me mostly above the snow, that's all getting covered tonight. Slippery Brook was solid packed ice/snow and I flew down in under 90 minutes. Remember, after today bring the snowshoes. |
