Comments
Comments: Crazy warmup day with temps in the 50s to start. The trail was mostly packed down from the start of the Gunstock service road but we used snowshoes anyway because the warmup caused the snow to be unstable. One in our group did start out in microspikes but was slipping a bit here and there. As the day wore on, the trails got sloppier and wetter. Some places even our snowshoes sunk into slushy patches of watery snow. There were standing pools of water sporadically. Ledges and steep descents were all doable with a little sliding around in your snowshoes or spikes. It's easy to lose the trail on the way back, following the Brook Trail back down to parking because the trail crosses over the ski slopes a few times, so expect to look out for skiers towards the last 1.5 miles or so. If I had a choice to do this again with lots of snow pack and warm temps, I would skip it. The trails were extra sloppy and the mushy snow made for heavy snowshoeing. It was a tiring 11.5 miles.
