Lower Doe Town road is open to the small parking area (and beyond) but is very icy - would not recommend without snow tires. We were the only car in the lot coming and going. The parking lot itself is a skating rink - you might want to put spikes on before getting out of the car. |

One ball cap frozen in a puddle at the trailhead. One used tea bag frozen into the ice in the parking lot, not sure the story behind that one - done hiking, so a quick cuppa, chuck the bag, and we're outta here! |

After yesterday's thaw and rain, the trail conditions were what you'd expect - mostly frozen, with some muddy sections and a fair amount of hard water ice. Spikes worked well - we put them on after about 1/2 mile of very careful walking and kept them on until we were back in the car. Above about 2400 feet there was more crusty snow, which was easier to grip than the water ice. A beautiful day up top - bright and sunny and flat calm. There was lots of moose sign on and around the summit - we heard something large crunching around in the woods, but didn't get a sighting. The only other mystery today was several spruce tops, about the size of Christmas trees, near the summit. These had obviously been cut, and were fresh, but then they were just laying around near the trail and on the summit rocks. |
