Hiking Trail Conditions Report

Peaks Bog Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Bog Mountain Trail, herd paths
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Tuesday, December 10, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The pulloff on Stearns Rd. in Wilmot has been plowed, which was helped by snowmelt. Driving the road up to the trailhead was challenging, even with AWD. The mud was very slippery, resulting in a lot of sliding. Descending also took some care to not slide off the road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow - Spring Snow, Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: A couple of small drainages are running good from the snowmelt and rain.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Two blowdowns. One is just before the summit ledges with a herd path around it. The other is right behind the summit ledges as the trail begins to descend to the east.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I guess.
Bugs
Bugs: Nope.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: At the bench near the summit is some sort of small structure under a tarp and tied down with bungee cords and rocks. It felt like a bird house?

Comments
Comments: Wet and sloppy conditions this morning. I started out in an old pair of spikes but quickly removed them due to the messy snow and slush. It was easier to bareboot it. Once on the ridge and facing more south, the snow has mostly disappeared. No ice encountered, but a lot of the ledges are wet and slick. I also took the herd paths to the high point and the Cardigan and Kearsarge viewpoints. The former was totally in the clouds, the latter was in and out. I mostly beat any rain, just a light drizzle during the descent.
