Beautiful day for the traverse of the Bonds and Zealand. Heading up Bondcliff was uneventful, not that much snow on the Lincoln side. We bare booted until after the water crossings then snowshoes the entire rest of the way. Only one other hiker on the Bonds so snow was loose and unconsolidated. After Bondcliff the fun began, 6-8 inches of new powder plus drifts, some waist deep, made the going a little slow over Guyot and by then weather was coming in with some strong wind gusts. Zealand was a winter wonderland! No tracks from the summit all the way to the junction with the Ethan Pond trail then packed out to the hut and out. The caretaker at Zealand greeted us with homemade pumpkin cake and hot water, just what we needed to make it the remaining 7 miles out to the parking lot on 302! |
