Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Carter Dome, NH
Trails
Trails: Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, Carter Dome Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 7, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: 19 MBT lot well plowed. Not too full in early AM or in mid-late PM.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No real issues. Crossings on Carter Dome Trail are not yet fully snow or ice bridged, but are not difficult on snow, rocks, and in shallow water.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Several blowdowns on both trails. On 19 Mile Brook Trail, a few easy step-overs, one awkward step-over, and one sort-of-crawl under. On Carter Dome Trail, a couple of easy ones between 19 MBT and Zeta Pass, then two crawl unders (one of which could perhaps be tackled with a small saw) between the Pass and the summit. Signage all seemed okay.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: One walker was out early with a couple of dogs. Given the cold and the powdery snow, it seems to be the season for mutt-luks.
Bugs
Bugs: Didn't notice any snow fleas today.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found: One small pole basket near trailhead, left on a stump.

Comments
Comments: 19MBT straightforward. Powdery in the AM, well packed by the PM. Wet drainages here and there. Some were using spikes, but was doable today without. Still some open drainages low down on CDT. Put on snowshoes about 2700 feet on CDT (after the first two brook crossings). Definitely were helpful, and I would say were necessary higher up -- new snow and drifts quite prevalent above Zeta Pass. At least one of the folks who was bare-booting wished he had his snowshoes.
