This was a difficult hike. It snowed the night before, so there was 3-6 inches of fresh powder covering everything. Made it slippery and hard to tell where to place your foot. I fell a lot. Spikes were useless, as it was just powder. Was quite tired when I got to Baldface Knob Trail junction, where the snow amount increased. Followed the blue diamonds, thinking perhaps it was a relocation, but after giving up quite a bit of elevation I headed back up and followed the real trail. Difficult up the steep section, but finally reached Baldface Knob. Finally saw some footprints, but they were quickly obliterated as the wind had drifted the snow heavily, leaving bare areas and drifts over my knees. Slow going. Finally summited South, then headed for North. Trail was hard to follow in places, and snow had really drifted in the col. Finally neared the cone of North, and had to deal with a difficult scramble. The powder covered the rocks but didn't fill the gaps, so it was tricky. I was tired, dark clouds were rolling in, and I was alone, and doubted I'd see anyone at that point. Decided I should turn back, as much as I didn't want to. Saw no one the whole day, but saw a ton of fresh bear tracks, which kept me on high alert. Tough day overall. |
