Comments
Comments: Want to avoid Columbus Day traffic and crowds? Come here late AM early afternoon. The hundreds belonging to those many vehicles are ahead of you already. The drive home won't be bad, either, if you leave at sunset like we did.

Third time here, first time in fall. Gorgeous day for it. Counterclockwise is what is suggested for this hike, with good reason. The ascent is steep once you get above treeline, easier up than down. The descent is a beautiful gradual one and even the woods walks are nice. Color was at peak. Only one no so good thing happened. At the first set of ledges, maintainers have taken great pains to put signs up warning hikers not to step within logs they have set down to protect fragile plants. We watched several clueless people walk right through them. I spoke to a few people, they hadn't even noticed the warning signs. W-D gets a lot of people who are new to hiking and may not know about these things. A kind word goes a long way.

Had we started earlier, we would have checked the spur path off of Dickey (there is a cairn in the distance). Next time! W-D is a place I could revisit many times.
