Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: hmmmm, about 20 min into ascent (counter-clockwise) I encountered what I think was an australian shepard descending. He was a real cutie, as a dog lover I said hello to him and a few seconds later I heard an unseen woman above shout, "he's okay just don't make eye contact with him". As we got closer I questioned her about her comment and suggested maybe she should keep him on a leash if his behavior is unpredictable. Well that set her off. She started yelling at me telling me there was no leash law. I politely told her that regardless of leash laws, in the end she was responsible for her dog. Well she didn't like that and started on a litany of profanity at me including "you don't own the woods". I countered with "It was nice meeting you, have a nice day". Her hiking companion that I met a bit up the trail was very apologetic for her rudeness. Never encountered anything like this in all my years in the Whites.

Comments
Comments: This was my first time on this trail. Many recent trail online reports recommend going counter-clockwise. The AMC guide I have from way back recommend clockwise. I chose counter-clockwise. The ledges were mostly dry but there were many muddy/wet spots in between and I went down once on the descent due to wet, muddy boots on rock. After that I was more careful. At this point in the season, I would recommend clockwise as the muddy sections won't get any drier especially with the downed leaves.
Views from the ledges were FANTASTIC, pretty close to peak I think.
