Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, October 5, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Limited but adequate parking opposite trailhead for Carter-Gibbs on Hardy Country Rd. BTW, Hardy Country Rd to the trailhead was in good shape....easy for my Toyota Corolla to traverse.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All brooks/streams were easily crossed.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Carter-Gibbs Trail was obvious and easy to follow in many places but not so obvious in others due to blanket of leaves. Carter-Gibbs is very well blazed, though, so staying on trail wasn't a problem. A few muddy sections were easily avoided. Oregon Mtn & Elwell Trails were in fine shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No dogs. Coyote droppings on nearly all the ledges and small cairns along Elwell.
Bugs
Bugs: Not a problem (temps the night before were in the 30s).

Comments
Comments: This was my first time on Carter-Gibbs. Started my solo hike around noon and finished @ 4:45PM. Sections of Carter-Gibbs obscured by leaves, but I stayed on course by constantly checking for the next blazed tree. Dane Brook was only a trickle in most places. This trail must be loaded with ticks in the spring.

At the junction with Oregon Mtn Trail, I went right and tagged the summit of Mowglis. Turkey vultures were squawking above the tree tops the whole way. After Mowglis, I retraced my steps and came back to junction with Carter-Gibbs; dropped down Carter-Gibbs (did a bit of rappelling there with the aid of some rope someone thankfully left behind); connected to Elwell; checked out upper end of Old Dicey Rd; climbed Elwell to junction with Oregon Mtn Trail, summited Oregon and kept going on the Oregon Mtn Trail until I arrived back @ Carter-Gibbs; descended Carter-Gibbs to the car.

Did not see one person on the trails. This area is a real gem!
