Trails: Welton Falls (North) Trail, Elwell Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, July 11, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We parked at the logging landing used in 2017 -- up a short driveway just east of the original, pre-logged Welton Falls (North) Trail trailhead on Valley View Road in Hebron. Welton Falls Trail can be accessed this way by heading southwest from the landing, on a logging cut, for about 20 yards -- look for blazed tree and old corridor on the right.

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Worked with Alex&Ria today to remove all blowdowns (knockdowns?), about 15-20, on Elwell Trail from about 0.5 miles east of intersection with Oregon Mountain Trail to about 0.5 miles west of Bear Mountain. Also removed one blowdown on Welton Falls Trail.

Comments
Comments: A large logging operation in the fall of 2017 disrupted a short section of the northern portion of the Welton Falls Trail, as well as large chunks of the Elwell Trail near its intersection with the Welton Falls Trail, mainly to the west.

In addition to knocking over quite a few trees on the trail, the operation removed much of the tree canopy in the affected area, resulting in rapid growth of under story and subsequent filling in of trail corridor over the past nearly two years.

These sections of trail have become more overgrown with each passing summer; the corridor in some spots had became impossible to find.

Over this summer, a local camp has worked/will work to brush these overgrown sections, and possibly do the same in subsequent years. Coupled with the blowdown removal today, this 2.5-mile section of Elwell Trail will be in much better shape than a couple of years ago, making travel on it far more enjoyable.

(Thank you, Alex&Ria!)
