Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: As you are facing the gate, there is room on the left side of the road. This is a forest road that has private property off of it. Please be careful not to block any of the gates to these places. If people park carefully, you could fit at least a few vehicles on the side.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Easy small ones.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: WOW!!!!!! Someone was by recently and did a lot of work! Several blowdowns cut (we could see the fresh sawdust) or dragged off the trail. Thanks!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Should be good, but the higher elevation does not have water, so plan accordingly. Prepare to pick ticks off of your dog.
Bugs
Bugs: TICKS!!!!!! Some skeeters down low, black flies both up and down. Not as bad as previous hikes, "natural" repellent was o.k.

Comments
Comments: We did this from the west end (Lime Kiln Road to Page Road to Forest Service Road). First part of the hike was old grassy roads with pretty wildflowers. There are some forest roads branching off; maintainers have placed signs and a couple small cairns (near where the trail becomes woodsy) so if you pay attention you'll be fine. Woodsy section has some pretty stream crossings, getting close to the ridge the woods really open up - some nice pines. Trail meanders through the ridge, lots of nice views toward Vermont and western Whites. Spur path to a high point with a restricted view of Moosilauke. If you pass this point and descend toward the other end, you will come to ledges with much more open views.

This approach is less commonly used, sort of like nearby Black Mtn (using the Black Mtn Trail instead of Chippewa). Sometimes mellow can be just as nice as dramatic (especially when it's in the 80s or 90s).
