I've been wanting to visit this peak for a few years so today was the day. Brown Ash Swamp Trail exhibits all of the conditions checked. This trail does not look fun to ride on a bike - BUT I'm not very hardcore when it comes to mountain biking and I did see some tire marks here and there...so maybe it really is fun (?) Once FR 23D turns into more of a foot path I found the 'trail' to be mostly obvious (YMMV) and there are some old yellow blazes on the trees to help. Once out of the tress you get the WOW factor - both in terms of views and steepness. There are cairns and faded blue and blue/yellow blazes to aid in finding the way. The summit is a bit anti-climatic compared to the outstanding views from the ledges and slabs below. The rock slabs here are nice and grippy but I would NOT want to hike this route in anything other than bone dry conditions. Lots of places for contemplation, a snack or even a nap. Complete solitude throughout also as I didn't see another person this entire trek. |
