Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, July 5, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We parked at the end of the maintained gravel road, .2 miles from the trailhead. The .2 miles would have been very driveable with pretty level gravel, just narrow.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Just a few small streams crossing the trail. Barely a rock hop.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of step-over blowdowns, one walk-under blowdown. Trail in good shape. Some higher grass in the open areas. Some wet rock and mud past the small stream that crossed the trail at about 1.7 miles in.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Did not bring a dog, but other than the ridge at the top, and private property until the WMNF boundary, would be no issues.
Bugs
Bugs: Some gnats at the beginning, a few black flies here and there, no or few mosquitos.

Comments
Comments: We had hiked Black Mountain from the Chippewa Trail and wanted to try this one. The WMG says it's not as interesting as the Chippewa in that the views are only at the top, but we enjoyed it, and I took lots of pictures of flowers. We also made it to the "tipping rock" this time, with views of the Kinsmans and the Franconia range. The tipping rock takes some work to find -- along slabs and scrub and some backtracking, but worth it for the rock and for the views from there.
