Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: At the SMT trailhead on Lower Doetown Road in Rumney. The road is a little rough but fine for any vehicle.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: SMT is in pretty good shape, although lacking blazes. No blowdowns. The snomo trail is under construction with new bridges being installed and some work being done to mitigate some of the mucky areas.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Probably not on the bushwhack part, but otherwise, sure.
Bugs
Bugs: Ridiculous. Not too bad down low, but black flies were still bad at the summit. The bushwhack was extra brutal with the deer flies joining in. I was in a cloud the entire time.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: A pretty uneventful ascent to Stinson. The hiking trail is fairly muddy most of the way. The biggest mud pit is at the first snowmobile crossing. Hazy views from the summit due to the high humidity. The side trail to the northwest viewpoint needs some brushing. I opened up the start of it a bit to make it more visible.

From the summit, I descended the snomo trail to just after the point where it starts to drop off the ridge and set off toward the 2,806 ft. northeast peak. I encountered mostly open woods and several open glades with thick undergrowth which made for cautious footing. I also found lots of moose paths which aided travel. I mainly stuck to the west side of the ridge which provided good going. The summit has two small knobs, and the one with the register on it seems slightly lower to me, but it's probably a toss up. For the descent, I initially tried heading more southwest in an attempt to hit the snomo trail further down, but soon hit thicker pencil woods. I adjusted course and pretty much followed my inbound route back to the trail.

The snomo trail was actually in pretty good shape, better than I remember it in recent years. There are muddy areas for sure, but nothing terrible. I haven't been on it in a while so I can't be sure, but it looks like it's been recleared in places.
