For the AT, I found the Rattle River and Kenduskeag to be relatively poorly blazed; Kenduskeag over to Shelburne-Moriah was pretty much not blazed, although the cairns on the ledges are easy to follow. Rattle River up high is pretty overgrown, although not compared to the Kenduskeag, which needs some love. |

The mosquitos were aggressive all day, but the return trip down Rattle River was particularly brutal - only a full-body mosquito suit could have kept them at bay, which I did not have. On the plus side, I made great time. |

Tough conditions today. Straightforward to the shelter, pretty easy up until the steep sections for the last mile or so before the junction with Kenduskeag; that's when the snow started. Relatively patchy at first, then pretty significant stretches which were unavoidable. Sometimes it held, sometimes it didn't. Postholing sucks in shorts. Snow wasn't too bad over to Shelburne-Moriah, but the mud was pretty tough. One innocent looking spot swallowed my foot up to my knee. Views were great, but it was a bit chilly and drizzly, so I didn't hang for too long. The Kenduskeag over to Moriah had significant snow, probably 40-60% of the way was snow. Slow going, with lots of postholing and cursing. Views were great, also still a bit chilly, but a breeze that kept the bugs down, so I stayed a while. Much of this hike felt like a bushwhack, as the Kenduskeag is really overgrown, requiring tons of pushing through branches, with lots of small blowdowns and areas where the trail wasn't clearly evident. Mosquitos had me practically running down to my car. Any day in the mountains is better than a day not, but I'd only recommend this hike right now if you enjoy the challenge. |
