Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lot was plowed with a little ice in spots. As a side note, Passaconaway Road is still gated so you can't drive to the Kanc.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only one significant one and it is bridged...luckily!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail is in need of some blazing on the ledges about half way up. There is plenty of yellow paint on the ledges but that doesn't help when there is snow on top of them. Maybe in the nearby trees. Some head-scratching spots where you really have to look for the trail. Trail is easier to follow on descent.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw none.
Bugs
Bugs: None

Comments
Comments: The bottom 1/3 of the trail is a mix of long stretches of dry trail mixed with long stretches of stable/unstable monorail. The middle 1/3 is mostly clear of snow but is wet with water running over rocks and ledges. Very slick. The upper 1/3 is a mix of some dry ground with long stretches of monorail. The last 200 feet or so is covered with very deep snow and some impressive post holes. The summit itself is mostly clear of snow. Ascending, I used microspikes on the lower and upper third of the trail. Bare booted the middle 1/3. Descending, used microspikes on the upper 1/3 only, then bare booted. Continuing on to Middle Moat requires snowshoes according to two gentlemen on met on top.
