Trails
Trails: Ted's Trail, Cliff Trail, Carolyn's Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, April 14, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Small lot had room for three vehicles. One person parked on side of the road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Ted's Trail has several, most of them bridged. The ones that are not I think may be vernal streams.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Good! There are a few blowdowns that actually have the blazes on them. Thank you, Friends of the Wapack.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw several, well-behaved dogs enjoying their day. Ted's Trail has plenty of sips and dips along the way. Two things to watch for: the cliff - it's a looong way down, lots of dead leaves along the trail which may harbor ticks.
Bugs
Bugs: Saw a couple flies, three bees, some black flies (not biting yet). No ticks. There are marshy areas along Carolyn's, so bring the spray for mosquito time.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: One black glove, one black mitten hanging on trail head sign.

Comments
Comments: What a nice surprise! Don't go to this area very often, more drawn to the Whites. Did not feel like lugging around snowshoes, etc, so we went here. We both love water features on hikes, which you're more likely to find up North, but looking up this area I saw that Ted's actually had a waterfall! And it followed a stream (with many cascades) for at least half the ascent. We did this clockwise. Most people prefer clockwise, Ted's is steeper, waterfalls are better viewed going UP, Carolyn's is a mellow descent. There are some icy areas in the upper reaches of Ted and Carolyn; we did not put on our traction, but you may wish to have yours (although after today's rain it may no longer be an issue). We did not do a loop of the Cliff Trail, we took it over to the ledges where you get excellent views of Pack Monadnock and Grand Monadnock. If you enjoy watching raptors, this is the place for you! We continued on to the summit of North Pack, where there is a huge cairn. The views here are obstructed somewhat, but is is still nice. Back tracked to Carolyn's Trail and took that down. Toward the end there is a marsh with great bog bridges and an observation bench. And all this is only a 75 minute drive from the Great City of Lawrence! My only regret about this area is that camping is not allowed.

This is in the Wapack National Wildlife Refuge, will be visiting again. Friends of the Wapack do a great job caring for this place.
