Passed over the green gate, and began bushwhacking towards the peak. Lots of whippet woods and up higher, dense and steep spruce. Not very fun.
Summit was a small open "bump" in an otherwise field of spruce traps. Found a "string" on a tree... but the can is likely under 4+ feet of snow. And with 4-6' of snow... we were above much of the tree tops, and had really neat views!
Within 30' just south of the summit, we had crossed an old logging/woods road. We followed this all the way out to the road... nicely avoiding ALL of the whippets and nasty spruce. A real nice exit! To get on this road, after you cross over the green gate, you'll enter a large field; go right and look for our tracks, or the road.
Late-morning, temps were still cold but warming, so we had crust at times, and breakable crust with dry powdery snow beneath. We came out as the sun was high and snow softening.
If you're working on the NH500... go grab this while the snow is cold and our track is there.
Great hike with JEM3 |
