Comments
Comments: This was my first winter ascent of Washington, and man did I pick a good day. Reasonable temps, relatively low winds, and clear blue skies with amazing views. Trail until the stream crossing just below the hut is solid and can be done in spikes; after that there was some drifting and powder that snowshoes were better for. Snowshoes were great for the snowfields, although they were frozen pretty solid into very cool wave patterns. Followed the cairns that weren't buried over to Tuckerman's, which was icy and required crampons. Trails were full of people, and the summit was like a party it was so crowded. Monroe is a mix of ice and frozen snow, and you can just walk up it basically, depending on your level of comfort on ice. A little meandering meant you could find snow patches to avoid the ice. The summit of Monroe was absolutely windless, and I hung out for probably 15 - 20 minutes alone, just enjoying a tremendous day above treeline.
