A couple of groups before us packed down the trail enough so we could bareboot for the first 2 1/2 miles or so, well beyond the first junction. However, snowshoes would have made it much easier. Once we passed the lead group the trail became much more difficult to navigate as there was only one set of snowshoe prints from yesterday the rest of the way to the junction near the hut. Snowshoes were definitely necessary for the remainder of the trek. Snow was loose and at times hard to grip. We continuer to break trail up from the hut junction to Wildcat A - very difficult, lost the trail a couple of times and ended up bushwacking a bit until we found it again. The slanted side stepping was a bit tricky and we almost lost our footing a number of times but fortunately, no tumbles down the slides today. Ended up breaking trail until just after Wildcat B. Met, in total, 6 hikers coming from the other direction which was brilliant as now we no longer had to break trail! Yay! So the trail should be in good shape now until the next snowstorm. We took care of all the heavy lifting this time. (Thank you to the guys coming from the other direction.) Enjoy!
Beautiful day to be in the mountains. The sky cleared after a few morning flurries. The sun came out, very little wind, not too cold. Lots of snow up there. We're hiking in the treetops so if you're tall, guard your face and duck! Blazes are about 2-3 feet above the snow. |
