Comments
Comments: Trail was mostly hard packed, and fast. I threw on crampons in the parking lot and wore them all day, but you could easily do it in microspikes or bare boot, as many did. Snowshoes would also be fine, but you might have to take them off a couple times on the ledge areas where all the better views start. The ledges, where they poked thru, were mostly dry with patches of ice spread here and there. Overall, my crampons might have given me a thirty second edge over the microspikers. Not really worth having to lift your feet higher.
The only spot you might improve the trail with snowshoes is the last .2 before the summit; and then only if you were the last ones on the trail. This could easily change if temps warm up, and the monorail softens.
Now, I looked behind me several times to make sure my crampons were not postholing, so don't you be calling me no parasitic;)!
You can use the xc ski trail as a shortcut, going behind the horse barn. Just inside the gate, look to your left and note the xc ski trail sign and opening in the white fence. They want people to stay off the groomed classic xc ski track, but there wasn't any track to avoid today.
